Construction Execution Model

Our “Modern” information systems that inform and manage the risk of construction have not evolved for over 25 years and has directly contributed to the lack of any meaningful improvement in the efficiency and accuracy of construction project management.

How construction is planned and executed, the information systems used to control the sequence of decisions and events are fundamentally the same since the advent and adoption of the personal computer in construction. While there have been solid advances in building modeling, little has changed in the information system’s contractors use to manage the process of construction. It is no wonder that the number of hours spent managing construction has not changed in 20 years. Virtually no improvement in project management productivity has occurred.

The Construction Execution Model is an idea built over my career in the general contractor’s office for the past 33 years. Its goal is to articulate a new way of understanding this problem with the hope that it will ultimately lead to better tools and more efficient processes for project managers and superintendents, allowing them to spend less effort on managing data and more time solving construction problems.
